Spring Creek Farm

Our History

The original homestead was founded on December 19, 1863 by Thomas Cane, an Irish immigrant who landed in Texas and worked his way up to Northeast Ohio. To put this date into perspective, the Battle of Gettysburg was fought a mere 6 months earlier (July 1, 1863 – July 3, 1863) and the great United States of America was less than 100 years old.

Dairy cattle were purchased and a milking operation was started, a dairy farm has been worked ever since. It has never left the family.

Now

Our farm has grown since then in size, and has always remained in the family. Currently it is owned by John and Juanita Cain and worked by their son Tom. In 2014 we completed the required research and documentation and was awarded the Ohio Centennial Farm certification. In 2016 Ohio added a new Sesquicentennial Farm which we also completed and have been awarded.

Now, as we approach our 155th year, we have lots going on! We are in the process of renovating and bringing our building and equipment up to date. We are also in the process of switching our core operation from dairy to beef production. We are considering beginning a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) type operation. This is an ongoing process that is very time consuming and labor intensive, so naturally, very slow in seeing the initial results. We have also started our core herd of Black Angus and that will continue to grow.

We have added an apiary. This began as a ‘hobby’ of Juanita’s. It has grown over the few years since it began and is now to the point where we are bottling the raw natural wild flower honey and offering it for sale.

Where we are Going

As we continue to grow as a beef operation, we strive and are dedicated to Quality and Naturalism!! Whichever way we end up expanding, be it purely beef or as a CSA, our goal will remain to provide you with the best quality products possible.

As we are updating our equipment and facilities, we are working on the requirements to complete the certification for the Certified Humane endorsement. A principle which we have always believed in, have always practiced and will continue to practice! However, we must complete the requirements, documentation and file to be officially endorsed.

As we move forward with our beef operation, we will also begin to move away from our current Angus/Simmental breeding to an Angus/Wagyu mix. We feel this will provide a more preferred marbling of the beef resulting in an awesome flavor. This will slow the maturity rate of the cattle, but produce a much more enjoyable steak! Never will we use any stimulate or growth increasing product!!

We continue to weigh the pros and cons of a CSA type operation. We hope to have a decision made by Spring of 2018 on how we proceed with this. If we do head in this direction, the first year or two would be a small group of individuals to test this concept. If you are interested in buying into the initial CSA offering, please contact us and let us know.

Our same approach will be taken for every product we produce. My family eats the same products we produce, so I offer you the same level of quality that I feed my own family! human hair wigs
